Blog Post #7 Preliminary Exercise

Composition is the placement of items or characters within a frame. This is very important within film because it makes a film or photo appealing to the eye. Things such as shallow focus, focus pull, standard focus, rule of thirds, closed frame, and open frame help to establish emotion and context. Practicing these examples of composition is crucial when attempting to become a producer or creator. The following pictures show my usage of composition.

Standard focus is used to create a sense of ease for a viewer's eyes. I chose to use this type of composition because it helps the audience understand the setting in which the scene is taking place. The slight focus on the girl in the shot helps the audience to understand the place in which the photo is taken. The viewer may decode that the girl is in class due to the focus on her and her book that she appears to be reading.

Focus pulls are used to shift an audiences focus from one character or object to another. This is constructed in the video attached. This clip has a focus on the main character. The camera shifts revealing another girl. The focus then switches to her telling the audience that she is now going to be the new subject.

Shallow focus is used to create a feeling of intensity and connection to a character. In the following image, there is a shallow focus that highlights the characters emotions. Viewers may take away the idea that the girl is in distress or highly upset.

Closed frame shots help audiences to build deeper connections to characters. They also help to bring audiences attention to strictly the character. In this photo the closed frame aids audiences to understand the characters true emotions. A viewer may decode the girl is feeling insecure due to the closed frame highlighting just the girl in the mirror.

Composition is very important in film as well as photography. By practicing composition you will become a stronger creator. Doing this exercise helped me understand composition more which will lead to a better opening sequence.
