The opening title or credits scene is extremely important because it sets the tone for the rest of the film. If a title scene contains cheerful background music and bright lighting, its inferred that the film will follow that same theme. Title scenes must also be exciting and intriguing in order to attract larger audiences. Therefore, I decided to change my opening titles scene to create a more intriguing credits scene as well as create the feeling of fear before the sequence begins.
Previously, my credits scene was a picture of a staircase with flickering lights. The title then glitched across the screen along with the names of the people involved. After rewatching this several times, I realized that it was not interesting enough. The flickering lights above the staircase did not contribute to my plot or message. Due to this I decided upon adding glimpses of the horrifying character swaying back and forth in the mirror. This prepares audiences for the intensity of the following clips. This also creates meaning by enhancing her significance to the plot by introducing her at the very beginning.
The way the names of the people involved appeared on the screen also appeared dull. For this reason, I decided to add a black flash every 2 seconds that had a person's name appear with it. This allowed for more recognition as well as an added sense of chaos.
Two things kept from the original were the glitchy title and the scratchy effect on it. The glitch creates anticipation whilst the scratchy appearance is associated with danger or fear. Credits scenes play a much larger role in developing the theme than we may think. Adjusting my title scene was necessary to create an appealing production.
