Sound plays a critical role when trying to establish a theme in a scene. Scores or music help to set the tone of a scene. More specifically, in horror films, loud sharp music creates a tone of tension and drama. Ambient sound or background noises help the audience to understand the setting. For reference, creaking floors could help viewers understand that the scene is taking place in an abandon home. Sound connects directly to a character's emotions. An example of this could be silence. Silence often represents a blank mind. This could mean sadness, fear, or loneliness. Other producers' use of ambient sound as well as scores has inspired me to do the same.
These ideas of sound have directly impacted my opening scene. In the opening of my final cut, the intense high pitch music creates tension. During the beginning, viewers are able to hear the ambient sound of birds chirping. This ambient sound helps the audience to decode that it is the morning as Alyssa wakes up. The loud silence when Alyssa sees the bloody mirror helps viewers understand the fear that she is experiencing. Silence forces audiences to pay attention to a character's body language. This allows the presence of fear to become more seen. This silence also formulates the idea that Alyssa feels vulnerable and afraid. The use of sound is critical when producing a film. These common ideas have led me in the right direction during the planning period of my opening scene. This ideology has helped create the feeling of fear throughout my opening sequence.
