Blog Post #12 The Conjuring

The Conjuring movie was made in 2013 and was directed by James Wan. James Wan brought his iconic horror film ideas to this film.  This film is based on a true story which revolves around the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren who worked with the Perron family. The actor Vera Farmiga spent time with Lorraine in order to connect and understand her character on a deeper level.

Cinematography:

The cinematography used within this film helps create the terrifying meaning it possesses. Techniques such as the tracking shots help establish this meaning. The tracking shots that follow characters through hallways or down the stairs create a sense of tension. The low angles used within this film create the illusion that whatever it is looking up at is intimidating. Contrasting to this, over head shots make the object it is looking down at appear timid and vulnerable. Hand-helds are used often throughout this film. These hand-helds help audiences understand that there is chaos occurring.

Lighting:

The lighting utilized throughout this film aided to create the ominous feeling. The most common lighting technique used is low-key lighting. Lowkey lighting is used to make a scene have an unsettling feeling. The contrast between light and dark lighting helps audiences differentiate between good and evil.

Sound:

The use of silence throughout this film is significant and unique. The loud silence builds tension and anxiety. Audiences often interpret silence as the calm before the storm. This means that whilst there is peace and quiet, something terrifying 'will follow shortly after.

Mise en scene:

Crosses are used heavily in this film. Crosses often represent a stronger force used to repel evil. Another example would be the Anabelle Doll. This prop tells the viewers that supernatural activities are going to occur due to the prior knowledge of the Anabelle Doll.

This movie heavily inspired my opening sequence. Things such as the cinematography, sound, and lighting in this film have helped me understand this genre more. Due to this, I have chosen to use many hand-helds to represent the fear and chaos that Alyssa feels. I have also chosen to use silence throughout my film. This is because it creates the idea that Alyssa has a blank mind which will be disturbed by terror. The Conjuring movie has impacted my understanding of this genre which will allow me to create an amazing opening scene.
