Costuming plays a huge role in the development of a films themes and tones. If a character is dressed in bright colors it tells the audience that the character is probably of good moral character. On the other hand, if a character is seen wearing dark colors such as black, viewers might decode that the character is connected with evil. Costuming can help give context about a character. This means that if a character appears to be wearing dingy ripped clothing, it can be inferred that they do not have much money. If a character is seen wearing designer dresses and expensive jewelry, it can be easily understood that the character is rich.
Although costuming helps audiences understand a characters traits and social class, it can also help viewers understand the characters current emotional state. If a character is typically in bright colors then suddenly seen wearing dark colors, that signifies that they have more than likely experienced something traumatic. In horror films this often means they have experienced paranormal activities or have joined evil.
Costuming is also commonly used to help audiences differentiate between good and evil. Evil figures are often presented in bloody, dirty, and dark clothing. Good forces who are trying to fight against evil are often dressed in white to signify purity and good intentions.
The picture displayed below showcases the ideology that colors represent good vs. evil.
These costume trends have deeply influenced my costuming decisions made for my opening scene. When planning my opening sequence i took all of these factors into consideration. This resulted in me deciding to make Alyssa seen wearing bright colors such as pinks and blues. The mysterious character she encounters will be dressed in a dingy, bloody, long black dress. This will symbolize that Alyssa is a happy teen girl whilst the scary character is evil.
