Blog Post #22 Todorov's Theory's

Todorov's narrative theory of equilibrium states that almost every movie follows the structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium, and new equilibrium.

Equilibrium- equilibrium is the beginning of a story during the state of peace.

Disequilibrium- Disequilibrium is the process of which the peace is disrupted. There are three steps that fall under disequilibrium. These steps are disruption, recognition, and resolution.

Disruption- Disruption is when a character or action disrupts or breaks the peace.

Recognition- Recognition is when the protagonist realizes the disruption or problem.

Resolution- The characters work to reform the peace.

New equilibrium- The story ends in harmony however, it is a different peace than the story started with.

Although my opening scene follows this theory, the equilibrium is slightly different. During the equilibrium of my opening scene, there is no peace. However, there is a sense of innocence present in Alyssa.

The disruption occurs during the equilibrium. This is uncommon but able to be done. The disruption starts when Alyssa has the scary dream.

Recognition occurs at the very end when Alyssa sees the scary girl standing in the mirror. Alyssa then realizes what she is truly dealing with.

After the recognition there is no new equilibrium. This is because Alyssa must deal with the scary character further.
