The horror genre is a type of literature or film that has the purpose of scaring its audiences. This genre became known during the late 1800's when Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto was published. This was an incredibly written gothic literature piece. The first horror film is believed to be Le Manoir du Diable (The Haunted Castle). This was a short film directed by George Mellies. This film showcased things such as skeletons, cauldrons, the devil, and ghosts. Following this production there were many many more successful horror films. These consisted of Frankenstein, Nosferatu, and The Mummy. During the 50's and 60's things such as 3D glasses and built in buzzers became popular with intent to further scare audiences.

As the horror genre grew, many subgenres followed. Sub genres such as psychological horror, body horror, folk horror, gothic fiction, supernatural horror, paranormal romance, comedy horror, etc. These sub genres brought in more fans due to the variety they provided. For reference, the movie Us is a psychological horror film. This film resulted in many advantages for the genre and created many fans of the sub genre, psychological horror. This film earned $255.2 million dollars worldwide. This goes to show the furthering success of the horror genre.

The history of the horror genre has inspired my opening sequence heavily. The works of George Mellies built a foundation for creators such as myself to expand upon the genre. George's ideas of ghosts and devils influenced my decisions to create a haunted character. Horror has such an interesting history that should be appreciated by media consumers more often.
