During the first shot, the scary character is seen swinging on a swing in a haunted setting. This is found to be dream that Alyssa is having. This dream hints that the scary character is something Alyssa has encountered before. This could be before the character took its haunted form or during its haunted form.
All was going well until Alyssa and Katies very last hangout. Alyssa and Katie were playing on the swing when suddenly Alyssa disappeared. Katie was left vulnerable, scared, and alone. Katie began listing off reasons as to why Alyssa would just leave. Not only was Katie upset that she was left alone, but Alyssa was also her only way home.
In this context, Alyssa has come in contact with this character before it became haunting. There is significant context behind my opening sequence. When Alyssa was in elementary school, she had a best friend named Katie. Katie and Alyssa often enjoyed play dates at the park. This activity was one of their favorites from third grade up until seventh grade.

Katie was forced to walk home through the woods by herself. That same night Katie was reported to be missing. Alyssa had seen the news and carried around the guilt on her shoulders. Alyssa had left in a hurry due to a family emergency. Katie remained missing and Alyssa grew older and began a new life with the idea of Katies disappearance in the back of her mind.
