Lighting is important when trying to ensure that a film flows. Lighting came as a huge struggle when filming my opening scene. In the scenes below, Lauren is seen leaving the park which forces Alyssa to walk home alone. During this scene, it is bright using natural lighting. However, the chronological scene that follows is dark which represents nighttime. This lighting difference creates confusion.
Using intentional lighting helps to create an appealing film. Dark lighting often represents horror or evil whilst bright colors represent joy or a character of good morals. Lighting also helps establish setting as well as time. For reference, if a setting is extremely dark, that tells the audience that the scene is taking place at night and outside. If a scene is bright, this may tell the viewers that it is daytime.
To achieve an ominous feeling using lighting, techniques such as practical lighting can be used. Practical lighting is using household items that produce light such as lamps, nightlights, and candles. Using this technique will provide very little light yet enough to produce shadows or silhouettes. This creates meaning by allowing the audience to understand the eerie feeling encoded through practical lighting.
To produce this ominous dark feeling in my film, I had my mom cover the windows with blankets. This formulated a very dark atmosphere whilst allowing a small amount of light in. This creates the idea that the scary girl is to be feared. Another way this was achieved is by lowering the exposure on my camera. This produces a darker appearance. Having this lowkey lighting aids the audience in understanding that the scary girl represents evil.
