Blog Post #36- Non-linear Vs. Linear

A linear plot is when the events happening in a film occur in chronological order. Linear plots allow the audience to fully focus on the narrative as well as build relationships with the characters. A non-linear plot is when events happen out of order which causes distortion. The jumping between time and events helps build mystery as well as tension. Using a non-linear plot allows a producer to present past events that cause current events or vice versa.

My opening sequence is non-linear. Deciding upon a non-linear film allowed me to create chaos and mystery. The non-linear dream shows future events in non-chronological order. The purpose of this is to set the tone. The chaos and disorganized feeling that this dream gives off tells the audience that the following footage will be based on mystery, intensity, and chaos. The back and forth between setting as well as events will allow the audience to see events that will occur further in the film.

To create the appeal of a nonlinear film, I filmed several different events in a variety of times and settings. I then inserted them into the editing app of my choice which is CapCut as well as Filmora. I then rearranged the shots to create the appeal of a nonlinear sequence. I then used the split feature to break apart the shots and create a sense of chaos. The nonlinear film technique creates meaning by enhancing the mystery, chaos, and fear in a film. This technique was extremely beneficial when producing my opening scene.
