Blog Post #37 Cinematography (The Dream)

Cinematography plays a huge role in creating meaning as well as developing characters. Aggressive tilts can be used to create chaos, establishing shots are used to develop setting, mid shots are used to highlight body language, etc. Camera technique played a significant role in creating intentional meaning in my opening scene.

The first shot seen of my opening uses a mid-shot. This mid shot shows the body language of the scary character. She is seen as tense to show that she has some things she must get off her mind such as being ditched by her best friend causing her death. Shots three, four, five, and twelve highlight the haunting character swaying back and forth in the mirror. These shots also utilize mid shots to show her body language except this time, we see a change in body language. In these shots she is seen swaying freely representing the fact that since she has begun her haunting, she has been releasing some built-up tension and anger.

Shots two, six, seven, nine, and ten show the scary character writing "remember me?" with blood on Alyssa's bathroom mirror. The camera technique used in these shots is rule of thirds. This technique pulls the audiences focus to the character which allows them to have a deeper level of engagement with what is happening in the scene.

In shot eight Alyssa opens the refrigerator when suddenly the lights turn off. She then screams due to the fear and shock. To enhance the meaning behind this shot, I used several techniques such as rule of thirds, shallow focus, and establishing shot. The rule of thirds draws the audience's attention to Alyssa. The shallow focus blurs things in the background such as her phone and cup. This enhances the importance of Alyssa's character. The establishing shot helps the audience understand where Alyssa is. This shot reveals things such as the oven, microwave, and refrigerator. This aids the audience in understanding that she is in the kitchen.

Shot eleven uses an over the shoulder shot to reveal what is hiding in the closet. This shot presents Alyssa opening the closet door to only be surprised by the scary girl standing in the closet.

The thirteenth shot uses an aggressive tilt to create chaos and fear. Within this shot, Alyssa is on her phone when suddenly the door opens revealing the horrifying character. Alyssa feels terrified when seeing this, therefore, the technique utilized must embed this same feeling into the audience.

In shot fourteen Alyssa appears to be drying her face; she looks up to see "remember me?" written in blood on her mirror. The scary character is standing behind her revealing that she is responsible for the message. The cinematography technique used in this shot is a two shot. This two-shot helps the audience understand the relationship between the two characters. The scream that leaves Alyssa's mouth tells the audience that she is fearful of the haunting character. This technique shows Alyssa's stand-offish body language towards the character.
