In the shot that shows Alyssa opening her closet to see the scary character, there is an intense light shining upon the character. This creates meaning by enhancing her importance. This also enhances her mysteriousness. This is because the light shining from below makes the girl appear much more intimidating. In shot three there is a usage of backlight. This backlight enhances the significance of the character. Everything before and beyond the haunting character is dark. However, behind as well as in front of the character is lit up. This lighting technique helps the audience focus on the fact that Alyssa has been scared in that specific spot. In that lighting the character as well as Alyssa are able to be seen due to the lighting in that specific area.
In the shots that contain the haunting creature swaying back and forth in the mirror, the shadow that is created illustrates a sense of uneasiness. The shadow gives the viewers the idea that Alyssa is continuously haunted by this character due to her everlasting shadow that is present in these shots. In shot 15, the very dim lighting shining on the mirror creates a foggy appearance covering the haunting character. This helps the character stay mysterious as well as appear far more intimidating. The sudden darkness that falls upon the characters helps the audience understand the change of setting and aids in understanding that it was all a dream.
In the shots that show the mysterious character writing "remember me?" in blood on the mirror, the character has little to no light on her. The reasoning for this is to exaggerate the action of writing the words on the mirror. These words are significant to the film which is why they are the main focus of this shot. The technique known as practical lighting was used in this shot. The wallflower plugged in to the wall gives off minor light which creates a sense of realism and aids in creating low-key lighting.
