Blog Post #42 Sound (After Dream)

Whilst Alyssa is leaving her room, getting cereal, making herself a bowl, and then sitting down there is the presence of what sounds like a TV playing in the background. This tells the audience that Alyssa's mom was previously watching TV. This also helps to soften the tone of the shots which helps represent relief.

This background noise is no longer present when Alyssa is speaking to her mother about her dream as well as when Alyssa's mom informs her of her father's actions the previous night. The lack of background noise creates tension and discomfort. the tensions allow the audience to understand and engage with the words exiting Alyssas mouth. The silence removes any distractions and helps the viewers understand Alyssa is still uncomfortable about her dream. This silence continues throughout this conversation when Alyssa is informed about her dad. The awkward silence present when Alyssa is told this information hints to the audience that Alyssa nor her mother are very fond of her father. The silence also lets the audience decode the idea that this causes Alyssa to struggle with her mental health due to the loud silence that is present.

During the shot where Alyssa is being woken up, there are birds chirping in the background. This use of ambient sound helps establish the time in which the scene is taking place. The birds chirping allows the audience to determine that it is morning. The cheerful tone of the chirping also helps audiences distinguish good from evil. In this case the haunting character is the evil and Alyssa is the character representing good. The high pitch chirping signifies peace and tranquility.
