Blog Post # 51 CCR 1 Challenging Conventions (Zoom)

Zoom:

Olivia- Hello everyone, I am Olivia Pridgen, and I am the producer/ director of the opening scene LOST. Today we will be doing a zoom call with some viewers to answer some questions they may have. Let's start off with Samantha.

Samantha- Hello everyone, I'm Samantha and my first question is what stereotypes did you represent in your production and how did you achieve this?

Olivia- That's an amazing question and to answer that, i did not showcase any stereotypes however, i did showcase a counterstereotype. a counter stereotype is when a film challenges or does the opposite of an existing stereotype.

Olivia- Now going further into that, I challenged the idea that teens can't struggle with mental health. I did this by showcasing a young teen who struggles withs mental health due to her repressed guilt and her parents' divorce.

Olivia- To achieve this, I used microelements such as mise en sene, cinematography, lighting, and sound. In shots where Alyssa is told about her father's actions, she sits in awkward silence. This is present to help audiences understand that she is distraught about the subject.

Olivia- To show that Alyssa is struggling with mental health she appears extremely stressed whilst talking about her dream.

Oliva- If this film were to continue, it would be revealed that the dream was caused by her buried guilt of her best friends' disappearance. this also correlates to her mental health issues.

Olivia- The shallow focus shot that is present during the shot where she talks to her mom, enhances Alyssas stressed appearance. This allows viewers to understand that she struggles with mental health.

Elizabeth- What social groups are represented?

Olivia- So in my sequence the social group that is represented is young teens struggling with mental health. This teen being Alyssa.

Marie- What conventions are challenged in this film?

Olivia- I love this question well to answer that, horror films often follow the convention of using a linear plot. However, movies like the grudge follow a non-linear plot. This spoke to me resulting in me challenging this convention and using a non-linear plot.

Olivia- Using a non-linear plot allowed me to create the dream which was crucial to the plot. This also allowed me to create a sense of chaos within my sequence due to the constant shift.

Emma- Are there any typical horror conventions that you used?

Olivia- Yes there are many typical conventions that I used such as lowkey-lighting and eerie sounds. Horror movies such as the conjuring produced by James wan, use lowkey lighting to create an unsettling atmosphere.

Olivia- I used this convention to my advantage and created low-key lighting in shots showcasing the haunting character. This allowed viewers to understand that she is to be feared.

Olivia- Any last questions before I go?

Marie- I think that's all

Olivia- Well thank you so much for joining me today I am so happy I got to answer all of your questions I'm so grateful you guys love my production.

Samantha- It's truly an honor to be on this zoom with you answering our questions

Olivia- That means a lot well goodbye!!!
